► The ice mass of the paleoglacier from Sierra de Béjar (Spain) was reconstructed. ► The regional equilibrium line altitude was estimated at an elevation of 2010 m asl. ► The age of the maximum extent of glacier predates the global Last Glacial Maximum. ► The paleoglacier evolved from a plateau icecap to a plateau icefield. ► During the end of deglaciation the glacier fragmented in cirque and valley glaciers.
