Distribution and causes of landslides in the eastern Peloritani of NE Sicily and western Aspromonte of SW Calabria, Italy

► We investigate the controls on landsliding in the orogens of Peloritani and Aspromonte. ► These landscapes have similar lithology and climate, but different tectonic settings. ► Landslides are mapped from aerial photographs, supplemented by field observations. ► The landslide distribution in Peloritani is governed by faults lowering rock mass strength. ► Aspromonte landslides are caused by undermining of valley walls by fluvial incision.
