پروتئین فلورسنت سبز یا GFP پروتئینی دارای ۲۳۸ اسید آمینه است که نخستین بار از نوعی عروس دریایی به دست آمده است. این پروتئین که زیر تابش فرابنفش از خود نور سبز می‌گسیلد، به عنوان ابزاری مهم در آشکارسازی فرایندهای گوناگون در زیست‌شناسی به کار می‌رود. جایزه نوبل شیمی سال ۲۰۰۸ به خاطر کشف این پروتئین به اسامو شیمومورا، مارتین کلایف و راجر تسین داده شد. چندین عضو از راسته کیسه تنان بیولومینسنت هستند؛ برخی نور آبی منتشر می کنند و برخی دیگر نور سبز. هنگامی که شیمامورو و همکارانش اولین پروتئین تولید کنند نور را از یک کیسه تن با بیولومینسینگ سبز، آکوآرین از یک ژله ماهی به نام Aequorea victoria، استخراج و مشخصه یابی کردند، دریافتند که آکوآرین فعال، نور آبی تولید می کند، نه نور سبز بنابراین نور سبز در Aequorea victoria توسط تحریک پروتئین دیگری که ذاتاً فلورسانت است تولید می شود، که آن را به عنوان پروتئین سبز توصیف می کردند، که اکنون به عنوان پروئین فلورسنت سبز (GFP) نامیده می شود. پروتئین فلورسنت سبز بیش از صد و شصت میلیون سال است که در گونه ای از ژله ماهی به نام Aequorea victoria وجود دارد. البته اشتباه نکنید، پروتئین سبز مسئول نوری نیست که شما در عکس هایی که از ژله ماهی ها گرفته شده می بینید، این نور در حقیقت مربوط به انعکاس نور فلشی است که در عکاسی از این ژله ای ها استفاده می شود. در Aequorea victoria پروتئین به نام آکوارین با اتصال به یون کلسیم نور آبی آزاد می کند. این نور آبی کاملاً توسط پروتئین سبز جذب می شود، که سبب می شود این پروتئین نور سبز از خود منتشر کند که در تصویر زیر آن را می بیند.
